Is My Air Conditioner Running Properly?

After five minutes, check the air temperature. It should be around 15 degrees cooler than the air in your home. If it is warmer, this is a sign that your AC unit may not be very efficient.

Check Your Outdoor Unit

You will periodically want to check your outdoor unit. You should see the fan blowing quickly and hear a faint noise. If the fan blades are moving slow or not moving at all and you hear a noise louder than it should be, it is time to contact an HVAC technician.

Inspect Your Evaporator Coils

Dust can quickly build up on your evaporator coil, and this can cause your air conditioning system to work harder than it should. You can purchase coil cleaner and clean them yourself, but you may miss something on the coils and have to do it again. Instead of doing this task yourself, contact an HVAC technician to handle it for you.

Thermostat Inspection

To ensure that your AC unit is running efficiently, you will want to check your thermostat every month or so. Make sure that it is functioning well. If it is battery-operated, ensure you replace the batteries every few months.
